'Our animals - forget about the family'

'My Family and Other Animals is an autobiographical work by naturalist Gerald Durrell, telling of the part of his childhood he spent on the Greek island of Corfu between 1935 and 1939. It describes the life of the Durrell Family on the island in a humorous manner ...'

The title of this post is 'Our animals - forget about the family'

When Patrick was six he badgered his parents to get a dog. Parents relented. Dog was procured, a lovely golden labrador pup. He was called Sandy. (Yes we were gifted with imagination around naming a golden lab!) We got the dog around the time Tommy was born. Tommy as an infant suffice it to say was not as placid as he is now. Pup aged 12 weeks, Tommy aged 6 weeks, Pup gets hepatitis. Vet suggested putting pup down since infant in the house.

Vet said nothing about Tommy.

After that last sentence I have just lost my rights to an ensuite in my future nursing home!

Anyway back to the story. Denis and Patrick did the needful with the sick little pup and returned from the vet with the pup's collar. Me the thrifty one in this house, felt this was a bit harsh - recovering the collar from the poor animal!

Anyhow time passed. Tommy grew into the delightful boy he is today

(Ensuite now restored, I hope after that last sentence)

When Tommy was six months old I come home one day to find a new pup installed, a golden labrador pup. Yes you have guessed the name. Sandy. Yes you guessed, 'new Sandy' was wearing 'old Sandy's' collar. I was really put out. I asked if I died, would I look down from Heaven (hopeful aren't I!) and see another 'Lily' wearing my clothes, in my place.

I never waited for the answer.
